A soft surrender

A soft surrender

This is the project that started my pursuit in conceptual jewellery - my friend Lukas commissioned 2 rings with an open brief at the end of 2024. You can view my video process here.

"Idk if this helps at all. But just do you man. I just like sentimental work."

There was something about the trust that made me feel like I could be confident in my ideas. When I thought about Lukas, I saw someone who was full of bold faith, who was curious, inquisitive, a dreamer and a work-in-progress that you know would just turn out brilliant. I wanted the pieces to be somewhat prophetic of this future, and also serve as a reminder that God always has His hand over him and His fingerprints are all over his life.

I took inspiration from ripples and rock formations (which are distinctive bodies of rock with unique physical characteristics, formed by geological processes). I saw this process as the act of being undone and becoming again, and being slowly moulded with time.

Sedimentary structures called ripple marks are the effect of ripples on rocks. These marks indicate that water or wind once moved through the area, and the holy spirit in Christianity is often likened to the wind.

Sketches and process work

The second piece was a twist to the traditional signet ring with features of flowy water and rock textures. A reflection on the process of being made soft through love, to surrender to the ebbs and flows of what is and is to come.

Thanks Lukas, for the opportunity to create these pieces for you, and for believing wholeheartedly that I would be able to create something that resonates with you :--)

Love, Jaymee
