Odd Future's "White"

Odd Future's "White"

For Clarisse, my first international customer :-)

This ring is a sculptural interpretation of Odd Future’s “White,” exploring themes of transformation, dissonance, and emotional growth. Light, tree-bark textures, and orbiting planetary circles capture moments of fading love, near-death clarity (death of the old self), and full-circle moments resulting in growth.

Inspired by the concept of Futurism (an art movement) , the design disrupts traditional forms, layering discomfort and beauty to reflect the complexity of letting go and acceptance. It speaks to the juxtaposition of connection - that may result in both loneliness and feeling seen, the weight of memories, and the quiet violence of change.

Inspiration drawn from the lyrics:

“Could this be Earth? Could this be light?”

I intepreted it as the death of an old self, since we are ever changing as individuals. The visual I got was “tunnel of light”, which can be perceived as hope.

“...there’s trees talking like people”

This part of the lyrics feels like the writer is describing warped memories. Often times, our memories are not as accurate - we reconstruct them each time we recall them, which can lead to distortions and inaccuracies. This phenomenon is called “false memory” and I associate this to the idea of “the past"

“...tracing planets on my forehead”

Solar elements, earth, intentional worlds represented by circles were a design element we included to represent this line.

The back of the ring consists of branch-like features and joins the main visual component of the piece

Futurism movement in art had an influence over the way we approached the design. Similar to Odd Future, the nature of both forms of works were disruptive against traditional forms.

Left: Spring (Giacomo Balla, 1916) // Right: Solidity of Fog (Luigi Russolo, 1912)

The visual of light disruptions alongside planet systems and time were key concepts I wanted to encapsulate into the piece - both artists above illustrated light’s movement really well.

Clarisse wearing her ring!

This design depicts the idea of one’s life trajectory - the path (bottom part) seems smooth, but it interacts with different aspects of life - other individuals, love, loss, growth, which forms the entirety of who we are as people (top part). The two circle represent the past and present and how they come together to create our story.

The overall essence of this piece captures the ways in which one’s life is made of infinite possibilities of trajectories, and the choices one has made in the past, all of which come together in a full circle, bringing you to where you need to be.

Love, Jaymee
