The Autumn Equinox & other love songs

The Autumn Equinox & other love songs

My first-ever bespoke engagement ring was created with Erin for her fiancé. The couple's proposal took place during Autumn, a transitional period of rest and renewal, which is also the key feature of the ring. As they are both musicians and have a shared love for jazz, music was something significant we thought to include in the design as well!

During the process of conceptualization, Erin sent me a shared playlist between her and her fiancé. I focused on two songs - "Us" by Nosotros and "Les Feuilles Mortes". Both pieces include themes of the sun.

In music, the symbol of rest is the quarter rest. The ring is a representation of their transition into a new stage of their relationship - a union of two coming together. Love is observed in a form of the sun/source of light - seeping into every crevice of their relationship. It ties everything together, causing it all for flow perfectly. Just like in jazz, despite it being so dynamic, it comes together in ways that just makes sense.

Deeper exploration of Autumn and the sun led to the discovery of the Autumnal Equinox -The day when the Earth’s axis is tilted neither toward nor away from the sun, resulting in nearly equal daylight and darkness. It marks the end of summer and the beginning of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere.

Overall, the design focused on the abstract variation of the Autumn equinox. We played more with overlapping or connecting circles / ovals, and incorporated the positions of the sun to the earth into the ring. The idea of overlapping components also represents two coming together or a union. Thick and thin lines will be utilised, referencing the picture of the sun dog / light rays for a more dynamic appearance.

The back of the ring will feature the quarter note rest, flowing into waves and mountain peaks:

Thank you Erin for the opportunity to create this piece for you! A memorable first engagement ring in my books :-)

Love, Jaymee
